Maya Simone only began writing poetry at the request of her college violin professor, who requested for her to write original poetry for Boston Conservatory’s performance of Carnival of the Animals after hearing her Commencement speech. The rest is history.

Tiny Desk Contest 2022: deconstructed msc.
Expanding the tanka from the Castle of our Skin’s Black Poet Miniature Challenge into a miniature song cycle (msc.), Maya was able to express Maya Simone through a live looping performance for NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2022. Titled, “deconstructed msc.”, Maya Simone plays with the idea of creating one own’s soundscape as the backdrop for words. By breaking down the elements of a song cycle, she hopes it brings fresh ears to a beloved genre of music from Europe’s past.
